Craftsman Bungalows – The Heart of Pasadena’s Architectural Legacy

Pasadena was the West Coast Center of the American Arts & Crafts Movement and many of the City’s neighborhoods are filled with bungalows of every size and description. For 29 years Pasadena Heritage hosted its Craftsman Weekend to showcase the finest examples of Craftsman architecture, and our files contain countless examples of this popular style. This season we invite you to immerse yourself in the Craftsman Movement once again by taking a stay-at-home tour of some of our finest Craftsman Weekend Sunday Tour houses. Dennis Hill’s beautiful photography of our Craftsman Weekend homes reveals the personality and design of each house. Join us as we revisit them and learn about their history and architectural detail in this online, narrated overview.

The Freeman House – Inside One of the Heineman Brothers’ Masterpieces

Get a rare peak inside one of Pasadena’s beautiful estate homes in the Hillcrest neighborhood dating from the height of the Craftsman era. Designed by exceptionally talented and creative brothers Arthur and Alfred Heineman in 1913, the Freeman House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a Pasadena Historic Monument in 2012. Documented by the beautiful photography of Tavo Olmos, the house comes to life as a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. You will get to see the ornamental wood details, the restored, rare wave-patterned wood shingle roof and several unique Batchelder tile fireplaces.

Bridging the Past to the Future – Preserving the Langham Picture Bridge

This virtual presentation on the rehabilitation of the Langham Huntington Hotel’s historic Picture Bridge premiered as an exclusive event for our Heritage Associates. It was so well received and well done that we wanted to make it available to everyone! This pre-recorded Zoom presentation includes a panel discussion with Paul Leclerc, the Langham Huntington Hotel’s Managing Director, and Robert Chattel of Chattel, Inc. Historic Preservation Consultants on the process to strengthen and restore the Myron Hunt-designed foot bridge, one of the original historic features of the Huntington Hotel. Pasadena Heritage is proud to have consulted on this project and worked with the team to achieve a very preservation-sensitive project. After seeing this talk and learning about the original artwork that gave the Picture Bridge its name, you will definitely want to go and take a walk across the bridge yourself!
