The free, one-hour play “Save the Pier!” is directed by Paul Sand, a long-time Santa Monica resident and the founder of Santa Monica Public Theatre. This play is presented at the west end of the Santa Monica Pier and is free and open to the public. The play will run on both September 8 and 9 at 7:30 pm.
The story revolves around two groups of passionate citizens in the 1970s working to save the pier from Santa Monica City Council’s plan to build a 35-acre artificial island in the bay with a bridge connecting it to the Santa Monica freeway. After the new construction was complete, the Pier would be torn down.
James Harris is the author of “Save the Pier!” and he also acts as the play’s narrator, Lucky. He is also the author of the recently produced “Theatre in the Merry Go-Round” play “An Illegal Start” and the Pier’s official history book Santa Monica Pier: A Century on the Last Great Pleasure Pier.
