BACKGROUND
Leo Carrillo (1881 – 1961) was part of an old and respected California family. His father, a nephew of Arcadia Bandini, was the first mayor of Santa Monica. His great-uncle was a three-time mayor of L.os Angeles and a hero of the Californios during the Mexican-American war. Carrillo’s great-grandfather was governor of Alta, California in the 1830s.
Carrillo was a famous actor, movie and TV star. He appeared in more than 90 films, but was best known for playing Pancho in the TV series The Cisco Kid. He was a good friend of Will Rogers, who frequently rode down from his ranch on horseback to share good times.
A preservationist and conservationist, Carrillo served on the California Beach and Parks Commission for 18 years and played a key role in the state’s acquisition of Hearst Castle, the Los Angeles Arboretum, and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The Leo Carrillo State Park was named in his honor.
His second home, now the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad, is a registered California Historical Site.
